一個漢字,一個英文詞。沒有血緣,一個從心與腳長出來,一個從「渴望」的詞根長出來,卻在三千年裡押著同一個韻。 One character, one word. No shared ancestor, yet their lives rhyme.
本義都不是「愛」Neither began as “love”
愛,行皃。从夊。
「愛」最早的字書義是「走路的樣子」。當時表示愛的,是另一個字:
㤅,惠也。
√LEUBH, to desire.
Love grew from a root meaning to desire, to be pleasing. Its siblings hide in other words: lief, leave (permission), furlough, and believe, which first meant “to hold dear.”
兩個字的家族都藏在別的字裡:愛的意思原本住在「㤅」,love 的兄弟藏在 believe 裡。
最短的定義The shortest definition
樊遲問「仁」。子曰:「愛人。」
問的是「仁」,答的是「愛」。兩個字,沒有解釋。
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
The question was God; the answer was love. Three words at the end.
一邊用愛定義仁,一邊用 love 定義神。兩個文明最重的那個字,都交給了它。
愛所有人,然後被換掉Love for all, then replaced
兼相愛、交相利……視人之國若視其國,視人之家若視其家,視人之身若視其身。
墨子把愛推到所有人身上。孟子批評說:「墨氏兼愛,是無父也。」[9]
Love suffreth longe/ and is corteous.
Charity suffereth long, and is kind
Tyndale used love for Paul's universal love. The King James translators put charity in its place, and for three centuries the most-read English passage about love did not say love.
「愛所有人」這層意思,在兩種語言裡都曾被擠到一邊:一次被儒家批評,一次被另一個詞頂替。
兩盞燈第一次接上Where the two lamps met
十九世紀末,英文的 love 先在日文裡用漢字安了家,「戀愛」等新詞轉道日本回到中文。舊字新義,從此「戀愛」成了一件可以主張、可以失敗的事。
And after, Amor vincit omnia.
When English wanted love to look elegant, it borrowed Latin. When Chinese needed a word for romantic love, it borrowed back its own characters through Japanese. Each language once reached outside itself to say it.
兩種語言都曾向外借一個詞,才說得出自己最想說的那一種愛。

| cognate? | 否。愛不出自 *leubʰ-,love 也不帶心與夊。這是對譯,不是血緣。 |
| also | en:love ✗ la:amor:amor 也不是 love 的同源詞;love 的拉丁親戚是 lubet(it pleases)。 |

拒收:網球裡 love 表示零分,常見說法是來自法語 l'œuf(雞蛋)。找不到可引用出處,不採用。
