一個是一根調緊的弦，一個是因敬畏而退開的一步。兩邊的譯經人，都在同一個詞上停下來，各自猶豫了一次。 One is a string drawn tight, the other a step back in awe. On both sides, translators hesitated over the same word.
弦與退避A string and a step back
Perhaps allied to AS. wandian, lit. to turn aside from, but usually to turn from through a feeling of fear or awe, to respect, to revere.
Old English wundor meant a portent. Skeat's guess is that wonder began as a flinch: the step you take back from something you fear and revere.
兩個字都從身體開始：一個是弦繃緊，一個是人退後。妙與 wonder，本來都是一種緊張。
眾妙之門，不能及The gate, and too high to reach
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
這樣的知識奇妙，是我不能測的，至高，是我不能及的。
一邊說那是一扇門，一邊說那太高、搆不著。妙和 wonder，都站在人能知道的邊上。
正法、妙法，奇妙、secretTwo translations, one word
昔燉煌沙門竺法護，於晉武之世譯《正法華》；後秦姚興，更請羅什譯《妙法蓮華》。考驗二譯，定非一本。
多羅則與《正法》符會，龜茲則共《妙法》允同。
同一部經，竺法護譯題用「正」，鳩摩羅什用「妙」。隋代的序者把兩本並排比過，說它們的底本不同：一本像貝葉梵本，一本像龜茲本。
耶和華的使者對他說：「你何必問我的名，我名是奇妙的。」
Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?
The angel will not give his name. The Chinese Union Version calls that name wonderful; the King James Version calls it secret.
兩邊的譯者面對同一個詞，一邊在「正」與「妙」之間選，一邊在「奇妙」與「隱秘」之間選。妙，總是落在說不清的那一側。
幼婦，與 wonderfully madeA riddle and a body
黃絹，色絲也，於字為絕。幼婦，少女也，於字為妙。外孫，女子也，於字為好。齏臼，受辛也，於字為辤。所謂「絕妙好辤」也。
楊修把碑陰八個字拆開來讀：幼婦是少女，少女合起來就是妙。這是「妙」最有名的一次被讀成人。
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works
我要稱謝你，因我受造，奇妙可畏；你的作為奇妙。
Here the body itself is the wonder, and fear stands right beside it, as Skeat's wandian would expect.
一邊從字裡讀出一個少女，一邊說人的身體本身就是奇妙。和合本把 fearfully and wonderfully 譯成「奇妙可畏」，四個字裡，妙與畏仍然站在一起。
