一個是砍斷絲線的斧，一個是指出法律的手指。漢語把「切開」和「判定」寫成同一個字；英語把它藏進了 decide。 One is an axe through thread, the other a finger pointing at the law. Chinese wrote cutting and judging as one character; English hid the same thought in decide.

𣃔，截也。从斤从𢇍。𢇍，古文絕。
斤，《說文》說是「斫木也」，一把斧。斷，就是斧頭落在絲上。《繫辭》說「二人同心，其利斷金」，還是刀的意思。
signifies ‘one who points out what is law;’ from ius, law, and dicare, to point out, make known.
Judge came through French juge from Latin iudex. The judge does not cut; the judge points.

是故聖人以通天下之志，以定天下之業，以斷天下之疑。
到了《繫辭》，斷的已經不是絲，是疑。斧頭變成了判斷。

English did keep a word in which judging is cutting: decide, from Latin de-, off, and caedere, to cut. Every decision is, by its etymology, a cut.
漢語把刀和判決放在同一個字裡，人人看得見；英語把它們放在同一個詞根裡，要翻詞典才看得見。

王說：「將活孩子劈成兩半，一半給那婦人，一半給這婦人。」
以色列眾人聽見王這樣判斷，就都敬畏他；因為見他心裏有上帝的智慧，能以斷案。
所羅門求的是「可以判斷你的民」的智慧。和合本寫他斷案，用的正是這個字。

刀舉起來，真相就出來了，刀不必落下。這一回，「斷」的兩層意思同時在場。
當斷不斷，與 doomThe native word that lost
語曰：「當斷不斷，反受其亂。」
這句話在《史記》裡出現兩次，另一次在《齊悼惠王世家》，召平說它是「道家之言」。斷到這裡，成了一個人的品格。
DOOM, a judgment, decision.
Before judge, English had its own word: Old English dōm, judgment, and the verb dēman, to judge. Skeat notes that the suffix -dom, as in kingdom and freedom, is the same word. In the King James Bible, words beginning with judg- (judge, judgment, judgeth…) appear 900 times; doom appears once.
愛的那一對裡，love 曾被 charity 擠開；靈的那一對裡，spirit 和 ghost 搶同一個位置。這一回，本地的 doom 輸給了借來的 judge，只在 kingdom 和 freedom 的尾巴上留下自己。
