一個是求雨的巫，一個是一口呼吸。兩千年後，翻譯《聖經》的人在同一句話裡，讓它們站到了一起：上帝是個靈。 One began as a shaman praying for rain, the other as a breath. Translators made them stand in the same sentence.

一 · 出身

𩆜，巫。以玉事神。从玉，霝聲。

「靈」最早是人：捧著玉去侍奉神的巫。上頭的「霝」，《說文》說是「雨零也」，落下來的雨。

The lit. sense is ‘breath,’ but the word is hardly to be found with this sense in English.

Spirit comes from Latin spiritus, breath, from spirare, to breathe. Its siblings are inspire, expire, conspire, and its doublet sprite.

兩個字的本義，後人都快忘了：靈本是人，spirit 本是氣。一個向天求雨，一個是吸進呼出的那口氣。

二 · 降下

如雲，如鴿Like clouds, like a dove

九嶷繽兮並迎，靈之來兮如雲。

九嶷山的眾神紛紛來迎，靈降臨的時候，像一片雲。

兩邊都寫降臨，也都寫不出降臨的樣子，只好借一樣會飛的東西：一邊借雲，一邊借鴿子。

三 · 在心裡

靈臺與燈The terrace and the candle

《莊子·庚桑楚》
不可內於靈臺。靈臺者有持，而不知其所持，而不可持者也。

莊子把心叫做「靈臺」：那裡有所持守，卻不知道持守的是什麼，也不能刻意去持守。

和合本：「人的靈是耶和華的燈。」拉丁文在這裡用的不是 spiritus，是 spiraculum，字面意思是「呼吸孔」。

四 · 相遇

上帝是個靈，所以拜他的必須用心靈和誠實拜他。

譯經的人要給希臘文的 pneuma 找一個漢字，選了這個本來指巫的字。在和合本與 KJV 能逐節對齊的經文裡，含「靈」的 512 節，有 319 節的英文用了 spirit。

Yet the King James Bible more often says Holy Ghost (90 times) than Holy Spirit (10). Ghost is the native word, Old English gast, “of uncertain origin”; spirit is the Latin one.

英語自己也有兩個詞爭這個位置：本地的 ghost 和拉丁來的 spirit。漢語這邊，靈的身旁也站著神、魂、氣。一個「靈」字對著英語兩個詞，像「愛」那一對裡的 love 與 charity。
